Presentation

In the 16th century, the architect Jean de Paris, Controller of the Royal Buildings, designed the Villeneuve district, to the east of the city, with a concern for perspective and regular order.
In the 16th century, the architect Jean de Paris, Inspector of Royal Buildings, designed the district of Villeneuve in the east of the city, with the aim of providing regular perspectives and layout. ''Rue du Boulevard'' (Rue Emeric David) was the main avenue in the new district.

Here Ledoux gave pride of place to the façade of his new Palace. The Palais de Justice (law court) was built on the site of the former Palais Comtal (count's palace). It was commissioned in 1787 from Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, who gave the district a new layout at the same time. Over 200 houses were knocked down to create the new building. The French Revolution broke out and building work was postponed. It began again in 1822, with slight modifications by Michel Penchaud, the architect of the prison.

The law court was finished in 1831 and the first sessions held on 13 November 1832. The statues of Siméon and Portalis in front of the court were erected in 1842. They were the work of the Aix sculptor Ramus and officially unveiled on 8 November 1847. A Neoclassical pediment, like the one at the Marseille law court, was originally planned, but never made.

The redevelopment of the Verdun and Prêcheurs areas gave rise to the biggest square in Aix-en-Provence.
The layout of the count's palace ruins will soon be traced on the cobbles.
