Place Gérard Tenque
Historic site and monumentPresentation
Place Gérard Tenque bears the name of a Martégal, founder of the order of Hospitallers known as Malta. Adjacent to Cours du 4 Septembre, it is the crossroads between the Lamartine shopping street and Rue Ramade.
In the middle of the square there is a fountain. This fountain dates from the end of the 80s but before that, there were two other fountains. One between 1881 and 1885 with a stone support (pump fountain) and the other from the beginning of the 20th century in cast iron. Drinking water was drawn from there, taken to town by a pipe, the main branch of which followed the RD12 (Avenue Fréderic Mistral today).
The current fountain appeared at the end of the 1980s when Rue Lamartine was opened as a pedestrian street. At the end of rue Lamartine, the Saint-Genest church proudly bears a statue of Gérard Tenque (1040-1120). We also owe him the founding of Saint John Hospital in Jerusalem.
