Romantic Strolls in the Heart of the Provençal Venice
For a romantic getaway, there are places that whisper softly in the ears of lovers. Martigues is one of them. The Provençal Venice isn't something you visit. It's something you feel.
From the moment you step into the historic center, something changes. Light glides across the apricot and saffron-hued facades. Water gently laps against the motionless boats. Hand in hand, you stroll unhurriedly, carried by the slow rhythm of the canals.
At the Miroir aux Oiseaux (Mirror of Birds), the world seems suspended. Reflections dance on the water's surface, blending pale sky and colorful houses in a vibrant watercolor. The air carries the light scent of sea spray and sun-warmed stone. You stop. You gaze at each other. You savor the silence, barely disturbed by the rustle of a sail or the distant cry of a seagull. Here, time stands still. It envelops you. It soothes you.
"We were looking for a romantic and relaxing day, and we found so much more: a true haven of serenity in the heart of the Provençal Venice."

A gourmet break with the flavors of Provence
At lunchtime, the interlude becomes a gourmet experience at the restaurant L’Hydravion. The place, steeped in history, exudes a simple and genuine warmth. The tables invite intimate conversation. The plates arrive, generous and fragrant: delicately pearly fish, sun-drenched vegetables, and fruity olive oil that releases its herbaceous notes. The Mediterranean flavors unfold gently on the palate. We share, we taste, we close our eyes for a moment. The South is as much about experiencing it as it is about savoring it.
Fun fact: The Hydravian restaurant is housed in a former garage where the world's first seaplane was built in 1910. As you walk towards the drawbridge, you can discover a monument to Henri Fabre, commemorating the first seaplane flight on the Étang de Berre.
A refreshing break and a gentle discovery along the water
In the afternoon, let yourself be guided by the Rand'eau Douce urban walk. Along the narrow streets and bridges, water becomes the common thread, a discreet yet essential presence. It murmurs, reflects, and connects the neighborhoods. Each turn reveals a detail: a weathered door, a half-open window, a piece of laundry dancing in the breeze.
Then head towards Jonquières. Under the plane trees, the clinking of cups accompanies your coffee break. The cool shade caresses your skin, still warm from the sun. A detour to Les Perles de l’Étang extends the pleasure with a local specialty to share, almost secretly, with your fingertips.
Martigues offers more than just a romantic day out. It creates a unique space. A breath of fresh air. A suspended moment where you can reconnect, simply, intensely, as a couple.
Good to know: The Rand'eau Douce trail can be explored independently using its hiking guide (available in print at the Tourist Office) or as part of a guided tour offered by the Martigues-based association Randonnée Ski et Découverte (RSD) on scheduled dates.
Our tip: To fully appreciate this haven of serenity, choose spring or autumn, when the light is softer and the streets more secluded.
"Les Perles de l'étang is a must-visit pastry shop in Martigues. All their creations are a true delight, with original and refined flavors that awaken the taste buds. A real pleasure every time you visit!"
