Located on the outskirts of the city of Arles, the Benedictine abbey of Montmajour is an exceptional example of a monument that bears witness to nearly eight centuries of history and architecture in Provence for a community of 50 to 80 monks consists of several buildings and forms a repertoire of Romanesque, Gothic and Classical styles presenting eight centuries of history and monastic architecture from 949 to 1791. It is also a place of inspiration for modern and contemporary art, the site fascinates Van Gogh (1853-1890) who made many drawings there in 1888-1889. "Ascension", the work that Alain Kirili (born in 1946) created for the abbey choir, pays tribute to his use of color "in thickness".Since April 14, 2017, the Abbey has once again opened access to the visit of the hermitage. The only testimony in Western Europe of a pre-Roman architecture in its entirety. The work of the hermitage Saint Peter is completed after 4 years with the restoration of the exterior cladding, the cleaning of the walls, the realization of plasters of gaps and decorative supports, the resumption of the floors, rock, stone and the lighting of the interior volumes of the cave parts. This 11th century cave chapel, originally a simple rock shelter for a few anachorets, is the oldest architectural witness to the abbey.
