Montmajour Abbey
Historic site and monument Religious heritage AbbeyPresentation
The Benedictine Abbey of Montmajour, built on a rock and proudly silhouetted above the plain of Arles, is an exceptional architectural ensemble testifying to 1,000 years of history and architecture.
The site particularly fascinated Van Gogh (1853-1890), who made numerous drawings there in 1888-1889. "Ascension", the work created by Alain Kirili (b. 1946) for the abbey's choir, pays tribute to his use of "thick" color.
Montmajour Abbey stands at the heart of the Arles region, on a rocky peak overlooking the Crau plain. With its two monastic complexes, it bears exceptional witness to eight centuries of history and architecture in Provence.
Come and discover the recently restored Ermitage Saint-Pierre, the only 11th-century troglodyte chapel in Provence, as well as the 1st floor of the Saint-Maur building, part of the 18th century, never before open to the public. You can also admire the magnificent terraced landscape on the south side of the monument.
Every year, the abbey hosts exhibitions by renowned photographers and artists.
