Memorial Site of Les Milles Camp
Museum Arts and culture Local history Exhibition spacePresentation
A large French internment and deportation camp (1939-1942) still intact and accessible to the public, the Camp des Milles now houses a historical museum, with educational and cultural purposes.
A unique place in the world. A must visit.
To start with, this place is like a historic slap in the face. But it is also an opportunity to go beyond and grow. A visit to the Camp des Milles is worth all authoritative lessons on civic education and the virtues of democracy and of the living together.
Based on the history of the place, its action is indeed to strengthen everyone's vigilance and responsibility regarding racism, anti-Semitism and all forms of fanaticism.
The camp of artists: one of the features of the Camp des Milles lies in the breadth and diversity of the internees' artistic production. More than 400 works have been created there some are part of the site. This abundance is explained by the presence of many artists and intellectuals (Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer and Lion Feuchtwanger ...) whose survival against persecution and dehumanization depended on their creative impulses.
“Camp des miles” Memorial-Site: UNESCO Chair. Historic Monument. One of the nine top French memorials.
15 000 m2 visit trail. Permanent exhibitions. Over 25 annual cultural events: exhibitions, films, debates, symposia, conferences, theater, music, young audience and al public cultural programming for all ages, forums, workshops ...
You can also visit the new museum area. This new part of the permanent display has been developed in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Poland and the Kazerne Dossin in Belgium.
Handicap facilities: accessible to people with reduced mobility. Chairs are available at the entrance.
Note that access is free in the following locations: Serge Klarsfeld permanent national exhibition about the 11,400 Jewish children deported from France to Auschwitz, exhibition "save the children: 1938-1945" in partnership with the Children Relief Work (OSE) and the hall of paintings with impressive wall paintings by artists internees, the path of the deportees and the memory wagon.
