' la Major ' Cathedral
Historic site and monument Religious heritage CathedralPresentation
The new cathedral "La Major" was built by Léon Vaudoyer between 1852 and 1893 in a romano-byzantine style.
Its “exotic” style and sumptuous interior decoration are inevitably reminiscent of Eastern churches. It is the largest cathedral built since the Middle Ages. It stands on the site of the Baptistery of the Gauls and adjoins the former Cathedral Major, which had two bays removed in the mid-19th century.
