The Red and the Black is a monument among the classics. Catherine Marnas takes this masterpiece to give us a condensed and nervous theatrical adaptation.

The play opens with the fall: Julien Sorel, a romantic character par excellence and driven by societal idealism, is judged for having attempted to kill his former lover. The portrait of a man consumed by hatred of class injustice immediately emerges. Thanks to a very frontal device, Catherine Marnas takes up in her own way the way in which Stendhal addresses the reader. The hero's romantic passion and all-consuming ambition unfold before our eyes and immerse us in the reality of an era, leaving no other choice than subversion to achieve his ends.
