Presentation

The team from the Art, History, Archaeology and Archives Department (AHAA) is offering a 30-minute visit to a building in Martigues to discover its history, its architectural details and exercise your sense of observation.
Wednesday 11 June: École des filles de l'ïle - Direction culturelle.
Meet in the courtyard of the Cultural Department, Quai Toulmond, in the L'ïle district.
On L'Île, between Quai Poterne and Quai Toulmond, the current building of the Department of Culture and Community Life, formerly the music conservatory, often arouses the curiosity of passers-by.

Before it became the Conservatoire de Musique, from 1977 to 2013, the building was a local school for girls and an asylum.
Although the term may be misleading today, the salles d'asile were in fact the forerunners of nursery schools, i.e. establishments that catered for children under the age of six.

These establishments came into being at the end of the 18th century and were run by volunteers who took in children from modest families during the day. They then became places of education, attached to the Ministry of Public Instruction, and were finally replaced by nursery schools in 1881.
Opening period (s)Wednesday 11 June 2025 between 5.30 pm and 6 pm.
