Presentation

The chapel is full of amazing little characters! Inspired by these faces, children can model an imaginary figure in clay. Children aged 6 and over, free, registration required.
More info:
Listed as a historic monument in 1910, the chapel is located in Martigues town centre (Jonquières district), behind the church of St-Genest. It was built in the 17th century for the brotherhood of white penitents.
What is this brotherhood of white penitents?
This community of lay people practised mutual aid, prayer, charity and solidarity with the most disadvantaged. They were dressed in very simple robes designed to conceal the social differences of civil dress.
The Penitents also wore a balaclava, which reflected a concern for individual modesty and anonymity, so as not to glory in their charitable deeds and to overshadow their own person before the virtues of the group, so that the person receiving assistance could only thank God for the help they received.
Opening period (s)Thursday 17 April 2025 between 2 pm and 3.15 pm.
