Ancient Theatre
Historic site and monumentPresentation
Neighbouring and contemporary to the amphitheatre, the Ancient Theatre still has part of its seating and orchestra. It, too, is one of the 8 must-see monuments in the city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Built at the end of the first century BC and predating its neighbour, the amphitheatre, by a century, the Roman theatre in Arles is less well preserved today. Completely excavated in the 19th century and restored over the years, it remains one of the city's most emblematic monuments, and one that reflects the life of Arles today.
To make the most of your visit, we recommend buying a pass (available from our online ticket office), which will enable you to visit the city's various museums and monuments more economically. Guided tours, Olympic sports demonstrations and Roman entertainments are included in the entrance ticket and take place during every school holiday. Cultural shows also take place from spring to late summer (not included in the pass).
Please note that the ancient theatre is not easily accessible to people with reduced mobility. It is also subject to exceptional closures during festivals and events.
