The Mont d'Or hill
ViewpointPresentation
To the north east, overlooking the town of Manosque, the Mont d'or hill offers a magnificent panorama.
Panorama on the old city in the shape of a pear and its patinated roofs, the ribbon of the canal lined with cultures and orchards, parallel to the Durance, vast horizons extending on the Luberon, the peak of the Sainte-Victoire, the Sainte-Baume, the Haut-Var, the mount of Aiguines overhanging the Gorges of the Verdon, the first peaks of the Alps.
Symbol of Manosque, the tower of the Mont d'Or is the only vestige of a castle built by William, known as "the liberator". He had a castle built on the Mont d'Or hill as his winter residence.
Over the centuries, the castle fell into disrepair and became damaged. Today, only the wall of one of the castle's towers remains.
Since the Celts and the Gauls, there has always been a lookout point at the top of this hill.
Around the year 900, the Saracens attacked the town and the Manosquins left the town (the current historical center) to settle in 5 small hamlets located on the heights.
In 974, Guillaume, son of the Count of Arles, liberated Provence from the Saracens. The County of Provence was created. William, known as "The Liberator", had a castle built on the Mont d'Or for his winter residence. A real fortified village was thus established on the Mont d'Or.
The inhabitants gradually returned to populate the village.
Until the beginning of the 19th century, the tower, the remains of which still remain, had its four sides.
Around 1943, it only had two sections of wall. During the war, the Italians would have had one of the sections of wall to make a shelter.
