A morning hike along the Grande Boucle de Cap Couronne
The day begins with the Grande Boucle de Cap Couronne, a coastal hike that reveals the full wild beauty of the Côte Bleue. The trail follows cliffs and coves, offering spectacular, ever-changing views over the Mediterranean at every turn. Between fragrant scrubland and clifftop paths overlooking the sea, this hike invites you to gain some height to better appreciate the diversity of Martigues' coastal landscapes. A morning shaped by effort and contemplation, especially enjoyable outside peak season, when the coves regain their original calm and the light turns softer.
Good to know when hiking in Martigues: The Grande Boucle de Cap Couronne includes a few exposed clifftop stretches, so bring good walking shoes with solid grip. Outside peak season, the wind can pick up along this coastal route, so a light windbreaker is never a bad idea.
"We were blown away by the diversity of landscapes on this route, between spectacular cliffs and hidden little coves. Hiking outside peak season, with no one else around, really gives you the feeling of having the Côte Bleue all to yourselves."

A picnic break facing the sea
Halfway through the route, the hike leads to Sainte-Croix chapel, a peaceful spot overlooking the beach of the same name. Hikers then have two options: set up a picnic on the spot, facing breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, or take a break at Les Ombrelles restaurant, located in the same spot, which also offers sea views. A welcome moment of sharing after the morning's effort, between sky, cliffs and the sea horizon.
Good to know when hiking in Martigues: If picnicking, bring your meal with you from the start of the hike, as shops are scarce along this stretch of coastline. If you choose Les Ombrelles restaurant, booking ahead is recommended during peak season, as terrace tables are in high demand.
An afternoon of relaxation by the water
The afternoon winds down gently at Sainte-Croix beach, for a well-earned moment of relaxation after the morning's hike. From June to September, hikers can also stop by the nearby WaterSports base to enjoy a gentle water activity such as paddleboarding or kayaking, both available to rent. Outside peak season, the beach retains all its charm for a contemplative break by the sea, whether reading, napping or simply watching the horizon, in a noticeably calmer atmosphere than in summer.
Good to know when hiking in Martigues: As the WaterSports base only operates from June to September, be sure to check its opening times if you're hiking outside peak season. Outside this period, Sainte-Croix beach remains a wonderful spot for a restorative break, with no need to swim to fully enjoy it.
"Even outside peak season, without the water activities, Sainte-Croix beach is well worth the detour. We simply sat facing the sea after the hike, a real moment of calm to close out a full, rewarding day"
