Presentation

This beautiful residence was above all a place of rest and inspiration for Alphonse Daudet. The museum offers a prefiguration of a vast project and presents the permanent exhibition on the medieval archaeological discoveries of the area.
The château: a former residence turned museum

This superb building, a Musée de France, with its monumental 19th-century façade adjoining an 18th-century farmhouse, was once the home of the Ambroy family, who welcomed Alphonse Daudet on his visits to Provence. Daudet and his wife Julia visited regularly from 1863, at the invitation of his cousins. It was the setting for many of his novels.

Now a museum centre dedicated to the history of the village, Château de Montauban is the forerunner of a vast cultural project that already includes the permanent exhibition Fontvieille, A Detour Through the Middle Ages, devoted to archaeological discoveries in the area. The exhibition has three main themes: people and places of power, society and economic activities in towns and the countryside, and the realm of the invisible between spirituality and popular beliefs.

Nearly 350 archaeological objects unearthed in and around Fontvieille are on display. Most of them evoke the memory of modest daily life: farming and pastoral tools, crafts, games tables, scissors, earthenware dishes, etc. The scenography gives pride of place to images through a rich selection of previously unpublished iconographic sources.
