Did you know that Martigues has been attracting filmmakers for over a century? Since the 1910s, the town has become a prime location for the cinema. This love of cinema is passionately cultivated by the town, notably thanks to an exceptional collection donated in 2007 by Prosper Gnidzaz, a great collector and film enthusiast: 2,250 reels and 79 projection devices, some dating back to... 1880!
To showcase this unique treasure, the town inaugurated the Prosper Gnidzaz Cinema space in May 2011, nestled in a fully renovated 17th-century chapel. Covering 260 m², the space traces the technical evolution of cinema, from the first animated images to 3D, in an atmosphere that is both educational and immersive.
In 2013, it officially became the Prosper Gnidzaz Municipal Cinematheque, a true place of memory and transmission.
Visit this unique venue during a guided tour followed by a screening of an interview with Claire Maurier, actress in La Cuisine au beurre.
