Presentation
In Provence, we seize the slightest opportunity to celebrate traditions, and that of the fire of Saint-Jean is not about ... to go out!
Unmissable event at the start of summer in Martigues. In 2025, it will take place on the day of the Fête de la musique.
Unmissable event at the start of summer in Martigues. In 2025, it will take place on the day of the Fête de la musique.
The 2025 programme.
- 9pm: Rendezvous at Place Mirabeau with the guest group and La Capouliero. A great moment of communion in store: dancing and distribution of lanterns.
- 9.30pm / 9.45pm: Departure from Place Mirabeau to the Théâtre de Verdure in the company of the groups to watch the Midsummer bonfire.
- 10pm: Lighting of the bonfire in the company of elected representatives and dancing with the groups.
An event organised by La Capouliero de Martigues.
It is sacred, even the locals will tell you, native Martégaux or proud defenders of ancestral customs. Small decoding if necessary: Saint-Jean is loaded with symbols.
It celebrates the summer solstice, the beautiful days, the joy of life and love, and the start of the harvest. Joy, conviviality, sense of celebration, hence the presence of folk dance groups, animated by fifes, tambourines and other traditional instruments.
The bravest dancers jump over the blaze, arousing the admiration of young girls and ensuring, it seems, the wedding within the year! Another symbol: the offering to the mayor of the city of one of the very first sheaves harvested, a sort of good luck charm, for men and for the protection of crops. But regardless of the meaning given to the celebration, we will admire the famous Martinique folk group La Capouliero, its musicians, dancers and guests, and the bonfire
which revives tradition also spreads another warmth: that of conviviality!
