Presentation
The Musée Ziem has invited Marie-Laure Sasso-Ladouce for a carte blanche: a surprising trompe l'oeil, an original scenography in which light shines through, creating mystery and revealing little bits of elsewhere!
The artist created this work especially for the museum as part of their new exhibition, and it is linked to Félix Ziem's travel diaries and his own.
This composition of landscapes painted in a variety of shapes and sizes is inspired by the destinations visited by Félix Ziem throughout the exhibition.
It evokes the idea of windows opening onto landscapes that resonate with the work of Félix Ziem and the Mediterranean.
Three colours were used on the three walls of the entrance hall:
- Ultramarine blue symbolises the sea, sailing, dreams and elsewhere.
- Turquoise green evokes vegetation and nature, and harkens back to the first paintings done by painters.
- The dark brown represents the leather of suitcases, wood and earth.
The dark hue of the walls highlights the paintings done directly on the surface, creating a trompe-l'œil effect that gives the illusion of real openings through which you can glimpse the other side, arousing the curiosity of young and old alike.
Lastly, ‘Ouvertures’ is a window onto the world, an invitation to discover the world and others, and to cultivate a spirit of openness, adventure and curiosity - all values that the museum is committed to embodying and integrating into the new dynamic it has been promoting for just over a year.
Visual artist Marie-Laure Sasso-Ladouce lives and works in Marseille. A graduate of the École Supérieure des Arts de Bruxelles, she has been exhibiting regularly in regional and Parisian galleries for the past ten years. Her work is closely linked to the museum's collections of landscapes. Working in both pochades like Felix Ziem and large formats, she creates works marked by great luminosity and flat, bright colours reminiscent of the canvases of Fauvist artists such as Seyssaud.
About the exhibition.
A dialogue between paintings, drawings, posters, emerging and more contemporary photography, archaeological furniture and sketchbooks, this new presentation brings together 200 works from the museum's collections.
We'll be following in the footsteps of the artist-traveller Félix Ziem and painters such as Francis Picabia, Raoul Dufy and André Derain.
The new route also highlights lesser-known artists such as René Seyssaud and David Dellepiane, as well as works that have never been seen before or are rarely exhibited.
