October 1990.
French captain Jorik Arteta, on a mission in Rwanda, meets Espérance, a young professor committed to her country's democratic transition.
April 6, 1994. A flash of lightning rips through the sky above Kigali. The Rwandan president's Falcon explodes in mid-flight. Thus begins a hundred days of terror and bloodshed. The perpetrators of the missile attacks will never be identified. Someone, however, knows the truth.
Christmas 2024.
Jorik, his daughter, and his granddaughter fly to Rwanda. All pursue their own quest, tormented by the ghosts of the past.
In Les Ombres du monde, Michel Bussi brings history into the novel and the novel into history, articulating, as a master of suspense, the construction of fiction with historical facts. A dazzling fresco, spanning three generations, about the transmission of memory, whose twists and turns powerfully reveal the experience of violence, loss, and forgiveness.
A language where poignant images surface at the heart of tragedy and thread through the shadows of the world.
