The Brazilian circus artist Maïra de Oliveira Aggio is an artist in her own right. In her first solo show, she is half-woman, half-monkey.
It is perched in a tree in the theater courtyard that Maïra will begin a narration mixing personal stories and “decolonial” thoughts, inviting us to rethink our relationship to the world around us.
Macacada is much more than a show, it is a sensory and intellectual experience in three acts where poetry, circus and lived experiences combine. Throughout the acts, Maïra transports us into a universe where the border between man and animal is blurred, where the tree becomes a stage and a dance partner. After the first act on the tree, Maïra takes us on an introspective journey through a performance-conference which questions Western notions of “nature” and “culture”. She notably cites the Brazilian quilombola philosopher Nego Bispo as the pillar of her research-creation. Finally, in the final act, Maïra invites us to dance and celebrate our ancestry through an intoxicating DJ set, a unique opportunity to take a new look at our existence.
