Presentation

Ernest Pignon-Ernest has been given carte blanche at the Ziem Museum in Martigues.
It is a great honor for the City of Martigues to welcome back Ernest Pignon-Ernest, who first participated in the opening of the Ziem Museum in 1982. As the only museum fortunate enough to have one of this artist's works displayed on its walls, it is highly symbolic to collaborate once again with the artist born in Nice in 1942.

From the Albion Plateau to Certaldo, from Charleville to Paris, from Naples to Algiers, from Nice to Soweto, from Chile to Palestine, Ernest Pignon-Ernest transforms the streets of the world into ephemeral works of art. Some of his images, notably those of the Communards executed during the Paris Commune and his wandering Rimbaud, reproduced hundreds of thousands of times, have become true icons of modern times. A pioneer since 1966 of what is now known as "street art," his interventions transform, disrupt, and reveal the places and events he has carefully chosen. He is an essential and popular figure on the art scene.

The year 2026 marks sixty years of artistic work that has been displayed in urban spaces and has garnered both national and international acclaim.

This major exhibition in Martigues, not to be missed, will be more than just a retrospective of one of the greatest contemporary artists; it will also be an invitation to reflect on the role of art in public spaces.

In partnership with the Lelong & Co Gallery and the Inguimbertine Library-Museum of Carpentras.
Opening period (s)From 23/05 to 15/11/2026 on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and weekends between 2 pm and 6 pm.
