Presentation
The ‘Laurons 11’ underwater archaeological dig is now open to the public. This wreck, discovered in 2010 by Bertrand Maillet during an archaeological survey, is the eleventh site referenced in the Laurons cove.
Close to the coast and in a remarkable state of preservation, the wreck ‘Laurons 11’ reveals valuable information about modern naval architecture and presents previously unseen elements of archaeological furniture.
The wreck lies at a shallow depth (2m maximum) and has at least one complete half-hull from one end to the other: an exceptional state of preservation.
This cove is known to have yielded numerous ancient archaeological remains, including several wrecks, but this is the first from the modern era, dated by carbon 14 between 1450 and 1630.
Come and meet the archaeologists and (re)discover this exceptional heritage, which bears witness to the maritime cultural landscape of Martigues and, more broadly, this sector of the Mediterranean coastline.
This archaeological operation is co-directed by Aix-Marseille University and the Department of Underwater and Subaquatic Archaeological Research (Drassm-Ministry of Culture), as part of the MoMARCH international teaching programme.
The Laurons 11 wreck is the 11th site to be referenced in the cove at Martigues. This cove has yielded a number of ancient wrecks over the years, but this is the first to be discovered dating from the modern era (between 1450 and 1630).
Since the excavations began, the Drassm and Aix-Marseille University have been helping to reconstruct the history of this site. It's a multi-faceted history: technical, environmental, economic and social.
