With Xavela Lux Aeterna, the unclassifiable American artist Dorian Wood delivers an incandescent tribute to the legendary Chavela Vargas.
At the crossroads of concert, ritual, and performance, this show resonates with the timeless voice of the one known as "the sound of the weeping earth."
A free and transgressive figure, Chavela Vargas embodied rebellion, love, and self-affirmation throughout her life. Echoing this destiny, Dorian Wood weaves an intimate connection between musical legacy and personal commitment. "For those of us who have been marginalized by society, Chavela is a divine presence," confides Dorian Wood, who shares with her Costa Rican roots, her homosexuality, and even her birthdate. Accompanied by a string quartet and a guitarist, Dorian Wood revisits Chavela's great classics, blending the traditions of rancheras and bolero with contemporary arrangements and an intensely expressive stage presence. Between simplicity and power, the music here becomes a space for memory and transformation.
