Presentation
Benzine are two musician-composers from Marseilles, Farid Belayat and Samir Mohellebi, and their contemporary poetry is sung in the Bedouin style. On stage at the Cour de l'île, in the open air. Free admission, no booking required.
Les Fadas de Musique, held on Mondays in the courtyard of L'Île, is a chance for residents and visitors to Martigues to meet some very special artists.
Typical instruments from western Algeria, such as the gasba [1] and the guellal [2], are recorded and sampled.
A world of analogue and digital electronics blends traditional rhythms with the sounds of bass and electric guitar.
[1] Reed flute. This is the main melodic instrument used to accompany Bedouin singing in Oranie (western Algeria).
[2] Traditional percussion.
Samir Mohellebi (vocals, guitar, machines).
Belgian, of Italian-Algerian origin, he currently lives in Marseille. He is a composer and performer in a variety of musical projects (Maghreb / ambient / blues / progressive / psychedelic, indie folk, classical, (afro)blues, etc.).
His instruments are guitar (electric and classical), Algerian mandola, rhythm and sample box, synthesiser, ukulele and vocals.
Farid Belayat (vocals, bass, machines).
Raised by his grandparents in a working-class district of Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria), he inherited the poetry and attachment to his ancestors. His encounter with the group Outsiders, who did covers of Pink Floyd, was his first turning point in life.
He then went on to found the group Ferraj, with whom he plays what he calls Bedouin Rock. In 2018 he met Samir Mohellebi. This meeting gave birth to Benzine.
