Presentation
Offered by Astro Club M13, as part of the Fête de la Science, at the Médiathèque Louis Aragon. Book in advance at the Médiathèque. Jean-Pierre Luminet will be telling us some of the stories of famous and not-so-famous astronomers.
Extravagant, whimsical, excessive, non-conformist, temperamental... How could you not be when you are navigating between the immensity of the universe, the most arduous mathematical calculations, the desire for glory, the jealousy of colleagues, the threat of the dungeon or the stake?
From Regiomontanus murdered in the Vatican to Edmund Halley moved by a marvellous observer of the heavens, from Maupertuis's antics with pretty Lapp women to Camille Flammarion's textbooks bound in human skin... Here are nine extraordinary and unusual stories in which we discover the extent to which astronomers could behave like hotheads, risking everything to go to the ends of the earth to confirm or disprove a theory; others threw themselves into politics at the risk of going to the scaffold, or confronted religious dogmas and their autodafés.
These adventures alternate between the tragic and the comic, the violent and the tender, but always with the aim of teaching, in an enjoyable way, the long march of astronomers towards the unattainable truth of the universe.
