Ivo Van Hove returns to Les Salins with a masterful diptych. In a breathtaking scenography, it brings together Charles Berling and Emmanuelle Bercot to bring to life the characters of Swedish author and filmmaker Ingmar Bergman.
After the Rehearsal is the story of a director living behind closed doors in a rehearsal room, and for whom theater is everything. Persona, on the other hand, features an actress who has lost her footing in life, having sacrificed too much in the theater. One abandoned life in favor of theater, the other abandoned art out of nostalgia for life.
With this diptych literally deploying a double theater – that of words, dialogues, emotions, fights, and that more pictorial, performative and physical – Ivo Van Hove has once again created an eminently powerful work.
