Presentation

Without a direct heir, Saint-John Perse and his American wife Dorothy, gave the city of Aix-en-Provence all of their collections in 1975. Saint-John Perse was sensitive to the cultural and academic reputation of Aix-en-Provence, among other things
The Saint John Perse Foundation conserves and exhibits the collections bequeathed to the city of Aix en Provence in 1975 by the poet who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1960.

Alexis Leger, a leading European diplomat, was born in Pointe à Pitre, Guadeloupe, in 1887 and died in Giens in 1975 he is better known by the pen-name Saint John Perse. These collections comprise more than 15,000 documents.

The Foundation holds regular exhibitions to display this heritage. The Foundation includes a research library, a museum, a publishing house, and an open area for all forms of art illustrating poetic creation: meetings with writers, exhibitions of contemporary art, lectures, talks and conferences.
