Theater, dance and contemporary writing in Marseille!
Since the 18th century, when it was built, the Bernardines chapel has played many roles. It has been a convent, a warehouse, a barracks, a ballroom, a high school annex, and finally, in 1987, a test theater.
Thus, between stone columns and under a dome that recalls (in admittedly limited proportions) those of the Pantheon in Paris and St. Peter's in Rome, a theater project has developed since 1987, focused on creation and research, accompanying artists such as Hubert Colas, Geneviève Sorin, Claude Regy, Romeo Castellucci and Marie-José Malis among others.
A project initiated by the directors Alain Fourneau and Mireille Guerre, with whom an author, Suzanne Joubert, has been associated since 1994.
The Théâtre des Bernardines joins the ''Théâtres'' adventure from the 2015-2016 season, thus joining the programming of the Théâtre du Gymnase in Marseille, the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume and the Grand Théâtre de Provence in Aix.
One project, Four Theaters. An adventure anchored in the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area, where each structure tells the story of its neighborhood, its city, its history and its evolution. Nearly 2700 seats: theater, music, dance, comedy, jazz, young audience.
