La Criée
Your Theater on the Old Port !
In the heart of the Cité Phocéenne and the Vieux-Port, La Criée - Théâtre national de Marseille, was founded in May 1981 and takes its name from the old fish market, transferred since 1976 to the port of Saumaty, near Estaque. Behind its listed façade, La Criée has the most beautiful stage in Marseille with a large 800-seat auditorium, as well as a 280-seat modular auditorium and a vast hall. More than 700 shows have been presented there since its opening. The Theater has the status of a National Dramatic Center and has been directed successively by Marcel Maréchal, Gildas Bourdet, Jean-Louis Benoit.
Macha Makeïeff, author, director and visual artist, has been directing La Criée since July 1, 2011.
Opened on the quay, La Criée has been transformed, welcoming and vast, with a view of the open sea from its footbridge... A factory of theater, art and images, and fantasy, it stubbornly affirms its mission as a national theater, the transmission of the repertoire and contemporary theater, the defense of the most diverse stage writing. A house of creation, a place of desire and impatience, La Criée welcomes poetically committed artists and singular thinkers.
La Criée is the Theatre of every day and every time, a factory of images and imagination open to all.
