A photo walk through the heart of the old town
The morning begins gently in Martigues' old town, nicknamed the "Venice of Provence" for its maze of canals and façades reflected in the water. The soft morning light sculpts the colours of the houses and plays with the reflections. Head to the Miroir aux Oiseaux ("Mirror of Birds"), the small, iconic pool where colourful boats and pastel façades form a living picture that keeps changing throughout the day. A few steps further, Sainte-Marie Madeleine church raises its baroque façade facing the Saint-Sébastien canal, offering a striking contrast between old stone and calm water. The walk unfolds at its own pace, alternating between contemplative pauses and spontaneous shots, as each person looks for the angle that best captures the soul of the place.
Good to know: For the best light and to avoid the crowds, plan your walk early in the morning. The Miroir aux Oiseaux is especially photogenic on calm days, when the water perfectly reflects the surrounding façades.
"We took our time, with no fixed route. Every alley offered a new shot, and the light on the Miroir aux Oiseaux in late morning was just perfect."

A gourmet break facing the water
At lunchtime, head to Le Miroir, a gourmet restaurant tucked into the heart of the old town, with views over the canals that inspired its name. Between refined courses, the eye wanders to the reflections on the water and the colourful façades, naturally extending the morning's atmosphere. Fine, elegant cuisine designed to be savoured slowly, far from any rush, where each plate almost becomes a photographic subject in its own right.
Good to know: As Le Miroir is highly sought after, booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially on weekends and during peak season. Ask for a table overlooking the canal to extend the morning's visual experience.
A scenic drive along the Côte Bleue
The afternoon continues on the road, following the scenic route from Martigues to Marseille along the Côte Bleue. This unspoiled stretch of coastline, still largely untouched by concrete, alternates between traditional fishing ports, hidden coves and spectacular views over the Mediterranean. Couples who love landscapes will find themselves stopping again and again, between the beaches of Carro and La Couronne, the ports of Carry-le-Rouet and Sausset, with a possible detour to the Niolon cove. Every bend reveals a new viewpoint, every stop a different light, as the sun sinks toward the sea horizon.
Good to know: Some of the roads toward the coves of Ensuès, Niolon and La Vesse are winding and drop away in tight hairpin bends, so drive carefully and make the most of the designated parking areas for photo stops. Late afternoon, with its low, raking light, often brings out the most beautiful colours along the Côte Bleue.
