Religious heritage, of Neoclassical style.
The penitents were laymen and more simply inhabitants of Aubagne who wished to gather in a brotherhood.
In 1551, the Black Penitents obtained permission to meet in part of the Saint-Michel chapel.
The 18th century was the period of prosperity of the brotherhoods. Important works carried out after the transformation of the chapel into a hospital during the Plague of 1721, mark with brilliance this splendid period.
The sacristy dates from 1728 and the vestry from 1784. The neoclassical façade is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. It was intended as a reactionary response to the baroque façade of the White Penitents.
This facade is a very good example of the stone-cutting work carried out by the craftsmen of Aubagne (registered as a historical monument).
The elevation presents four columns of composite order leaning against four pilasters, thus giving relief to the whole.
On October 22, 2008, the Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs received the departmental prize of the Rubans du Patrimoine for its exemplary restoration.
This monument is now a contemporary art center.
