Presentation
La Persévérance Chapel is actually the remains of a house founded in 1677 to take in 'women and girls of ill repute'.
Entrusted to the care of the sisters of Notre Dame du Refuge, the establishment was a moral and financial failure and was forced to close by a Royal order. In 1803, the chapel was attached to the catechism of perseverance, i.e. the more advanced teaching that children follow once they have received their first solemn communion, and took its name from this. It currently houses contemporary art exhibitions.
Architectural description:
The façade is an expression of Baroque art; the depressed arch portal is framed by two capitals with Ionic capitals, adorned with garlands of flowers and an entablature which features a three-sided architrave, a frieze and a cornice on modillions. The décor is completed by a semi-circular niche without a statue; the niche's semi-dome is decorated with a shell. It is flanked by two small pilasters and bas-relief scrolls. Two consoles support a triangular broken pediment. Vases on either side of the niche complete the décor.
