Abbaye Saint Michel de Frigolet
Historic site and monument Religious heritage AbbeyPresentation
Saint Michel de Frigolet Abbey (12th-14th century), in the heart of the unspoilt landscape of La Montagnette, takes its name from the many thyme bushes ('ferigoulo' in Provençal) that dot the hills.
In 1133, a community of St Augustine canons settled in Frigolet; the current heart of the monastery dates from this period - the cloister (early 12th century), Saint Michel Church (12th century) and the small Notre Dame du Bon Remède Chapel (11th century).
The monastery was gradually abandoned in the 15th and 16th centuries, to be occupied once again in the 17th century by monks (the Fathers of Saint Jerome), who rebuilt and embellished the ruined buildings. The chancel of Saint Michel Church was extended and the 17th century Salle du Chapître and the adjoining rooms, with their magnificent stone vault, were added. Notre Dame du Bon Remède Chapel received the wonderful Baroque décor which can still be admired today.
The Neo-Gothic Abbey which surrounded the Romanesque Chapel of Notre Dame houses 14 canvases by the painter Mignard and is adorned with 17th century woodwork.
