Museum of the Alpilles in Saint Rémy de Provence
Located in the historic centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the Museum of the Alpilles is situated in the Hôtel Mistral de Mondragon, a former Renaissance private mansion. Classified as a historic Monument in 1862, the building, with its impressive architecture, is built around a magnificent inner courtyard.
The museum was created in 1919 by Pierre de Brun and was completely renovated from 2002 until early 2005.
Ethnology...
A visit to this museum offers a greater understanding of the current natural and human landscapes of this part of Provence, which extends between the Rhône, the Durance and the Alpilles Massif.
A walk in time and space, the permanent exhibition of the Museum of the Alpilles evokes different unsuspected or little-known facets of regional heritage:
from the Hypselosaurus, the gentle dinosaur who once roamed the area, to traditional costumes and Camargue bull-fighting, via the growing and trading of teasel, opium poppies and seeds
... and modest art
Internationally famous works by Vincent van Gogh and Albert Gleizes were created here. But alongside these is the often remarkable work of inconspicuous, anonymous or locally famous creators, to which the museum also wants to attract attention. They include the ex voto placed in the chapels in the 18th and 19th centuries, decorated reels and canes, santons made of unbaked clay and astonishing illuminations by Augustin Gonfond.
The photography and graphic arts collection and the typography and engraving studio reveal the establishment's new focus on works on paper and on contemporary engraving.
