Combining poetry and archaeological research, "A Cup for Gyptis" traces the journey of a vase made in Greece. From the Ionian coast to the Gulf of Saint-Blaise, this small bowl, beautifully decorated with a bird motif, tells us the story of cultural exchanges around the wine trade as well as the encounter between the Gauls and the peoples who traveled the Mediterranean at the time of the founding of Marseille, in 600 BC.
Sandrine Duval, an archaeologist in Martigues since 1996, has supervised excavations on several sites occupied in the 6th century BC, in particular on the coastal settlement of Tamaris and on the site of Saint-Blaise.
Since the 2010s, she has been producing watercolours intended to restore the remains of the settlements and the daily life of the Gauls in the early Iron Age.

A bowl for Gyptis
A bowl decorated with a bird was discovered in 1937 on the site of Saint-Blaise by the archaeologist Henri Rolland. This vase, contemporary with the founding of Marseille, is one of the oldest objects imported from Greece attested in Provence. Along with a few others, it sheds light on the first commercial flows and cultural exchanges between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gallic world in the 6th century BC. A story richly illustrated with watercolors allows us to follow the long journey that takes this vase from one shore to the other. The reader is first introduced by the potter to the secrets of the manufacture of this ceramic. Then, he follows the adventure of the Greek sea trader who sets off to explore new lands as far as the Provençal coast and meets the people living in the habitat of Saint-Blaise, a stronghold of the Ségobriges located near the mouth of the Rhône. Finally, he accompanies the archaeologists during their work to uncover the vase buried for nearly 2,600 years. Each step is an invitation to immerse yourself in the little-known world of this decisive period in the history of Gaul.
