To start growing carnations, Papet and his nephew Ugolin needed space and above all a spring: a real treasure in warm Provence. In the hope of acquiring the land of their neighbor Pique-Bouffigue at a low price, Ugolin and Papet take advantage of the death of the old man to block the source and devalue the place. The farm seems available, but the heir to the property arrives one day with his wife and daughter Manon. His name is Jean de Florette, he is hunchbacked, comes "from the city" and seems determined to make his land prosper. But Papet and Ugolin are ready to do anything to frustrate his project.
