"How could a film like Toni have seen the light of day in the mid-1930s, 35 years ahead of the modern development of French cinema? For this UFO to exist, a whole series of circumstances were needed, of which Renoir was not necessarily the master or even the instigator." Alain Bergala, excerpt from the preface.

Martigues gives this feature film its documentary and tragic material. The scene is a fishing town with a history dating back several thousand years, whose decor is disrupted by industrialization. The characters are mostly from immigrant backgrounds. The screenplay is inspired by a local news story. The first performance was performed in situ during the two months of filming in 1934. While in 2019, the Gaumont company restored Toni, Martigues revealed, based on unpublished research on the news item, the primary character of this work, knowledge of which is enriched by a collective work of history and memory.
