Presentation

The plain of Carro presents a major floristic interest linked in large part to the existence of an original substrate (molasses deposits of the Miocene or calcarenite of the Burdigalian). Among other things, it harbors 8 species of protected vascular flora.

Posidonia: It is an endemic species of the Mediterranean, it is not an alga but a phanerogam (flowering plant) which left the earth for the sea more than 120 million years ago. The individuals consist of creeping brown woody rhizomes (1 to 2 cm thick) on which erect rhizomes develop which end in bundles of 4 to 8 green banded leaves, about 1 cm wide and 20 to 100 cm long. The rhizomes develop roots which are anchored in the underlying substrate.
By the height growth of the rhizomes in reaction to the deposition of sediments, the posidonia builds over the centuries a soil, called the matte, formed from the intertwining of rhizomes and roots compacted by sediments. The matte can reach several meters in thickness at the rate of one meter per century. The Posidonia form herbaria of variable size, up to several hundred hectares without discontinuity. The regression of seagrass beds (pollution, mechanical action, etc.) leads to expanses of dead mat, which gradually covers up with sediment.
