Saint-Pierre, patron of fishermen, is an inescapable figure of Provence.
The feast of St. Peter is one of the great traditional festivals of the summer solstice. In Martigues, the maritime environment is more than an asset of the city, it is the city!

So everything related to aquatic activities, starting with fishing, is a real local culture. The famous feast of the sea and St. Peter, patron saint of seafarers, is the annual "official" celebration, through its sacred, Pagan and popular process making it accessible to all.

During these festivities follow the spectacular religious ceremony on Earth (procession where the Saint is carried on a man's back) or on the Sea (surrounded by an impressive flotilla of fishermen and curious, the priest blesses the wreath in tribute to the disappeared at sea) , and the popular festivities over animations and musical atmospheres.

Beware of the nuance: in Martigues, the feast of the sea is not folklore, but of tradition! The difference: folklore pays tribute to past eras, as tradition continues. And this one is very current and alive!
