Presentation
Under the direction of Debora Waldman, the Orchester Régional Avignon-Provence and Nicholas Angelich, heir to the great tradition of French pianists, pay tribute to three great European composers.
Saint-Saëns' last concerto, the crowning achievement of his concert performance, is a tremendous demonstration of virtuosity, as if it retraced the long history of the genre. Nicknamed "The Egyptian", Saint-Saëns opens up to exotic inspiration, notably in its central movement which recreates the unreal atmosphere experienced by the composer during a trip on the Nile. In his final symphony, Mendelssohn pays homage to the Protestant tradition. The greatness of inspiration culminates in the finale, built on a chorale by Luther. The concert is introduced with a vibrant tribute from Estonian Arvo Pärt to the founder of Western music.
