Presentation

With the Art, History and Archaeology Department, discover the remains of the settlement and fortifications of a Gallic oppidum and a Gallo-Roman settlement (6th century BC - 1st century AD).
Registration required. Meet in front of the Church of St-Pierre.
The Saint-Pierre archaeological site occupies the upper part of a hillock in the heart of the Saint-Julien agricultural plain, less than two kilometres from the port of Les Laurons.
Since the 1970s, archaeological digs and research have revealed the Gallic settlement and fortifications of a major oppidum, forming the largest Celtic settlement between
Greek Marseille and the Caronte Channel.

For the 600 years of its existence, the village was able to communicate with Saint-Blaise, Cap Tamaris and the Ile de Martigues district, of which it was a contemporary. Then, in the 1st century AD, the village was abandoned by its inhabitants, who moved to the plain. For the indigenous populations living in the Saint-Pierre and Laurons area during the Iron Age, there was a before and an after to Marseille.
While the Greeks and Etruscans were setting up their trading posts (Massalia, which later became Marseille) in our region, the hills and valleys were populated by our Celto-Ligurian ancestors.
In the area around Martigues and all along the Côte Bleue, the indigenous people (Avatics, Salians and Segobriges) had gradually built their existence around a rural civilisation: they lived by growing crops and raising livestock.
Their habitat - perched on high ground - gradually became an organised oppidum with individual houses built around narrow streets and enclosed by ramparts.

With the development of the Phocaean city, their existence changed. The wheat, oil, wine and cut stone they produced would enable the Greek city to expand.
Over the last three decades, the Saint-Pierre site has revealed many of its secrets. The Saint-Pierre oppidum became a national reference point for knowledge of the Iron Age in the south of France.
