A visit to the exhibition on the history of the salt industry in Martigues presented by the municipal archives at the history gallery.
Salt has long been used as a condiment and as a preservative. With developments in industry from the 19th century, it became one of the basic materials of the chemical industry. Sea salt, inexhaustible, has the advantage of occurring naturally in the lagoon areas of our coasts. The traditional techniques of salt marsh exploitation have hardly evolved for centuries.
In Ferrières, salt mining took place for a little over a century, at the same time as on other sites in the municipality of Martigues, in Bouc and Ponteau.
