Presentation
The exhibition Traversées martégales presents archival documents that show how the car and mobility have been able to modify the territory of Martigues.
The exhibition also allows us to understand how we went from the path to the street and from the street to the road, while finding solutions to cross canals.
- The contribution of the automobile has had a major impact on urban development. Pieces and parts of the city are now reserved for the car with roads and parking spaces to the detriment of pedestrians and social life.
Roads in the city may have created fractures or boundaries between neighborhoods. Particularly true for a territory like Martigues, where mobility has always depended on the atypical geography of Martigues, crossed by canals and bridges. Also, over the course of the 20th century, the pedestrian, road and maritime axes have evolved by crossing or bypassing the city.
- The exhibition offers a historical journey through the 20th century.
- It also opens the debate on this urban evolution which begins to be initiated in the 21st century, towards a more peaceful city and a rediscovered social life.
