Place : Théâtre des Salins
Bruno Geslin takes on this play by Christopher Marlowe, a contemporary of Shakespeare, whose life was as tumultuous as it was brief. He delivers a large-scale epic of a king tormented by his impulses and torn between his duty and his desires.
Filled with power struggles, betrayals and cruel crimes, the play chronicles the end of the reign of Edward II of England. As he prepares to die, the monarch retraces the thread of his fall since the death of his father: his troubled passion for Pierce Gaveston, simple son of a squire, compromises, baseness, unnatural alliances, betrayals and murders. Bruno Geslin masterfully raises the excess of this epic and, as a nod to the Elizabethan era, chooses two women in the main roles: Claude Degliame portrays a sulphurous Edward II and Alizée Soudet his unhappy lover.
