Presentation

The purpose of this conference will be to introduce this collection by retracing the history of its creation and highlighting the links that united Ziem and his hometown.
Born in Beaune in 1821 and having studied drawing and architecture in Dijon, Ziem left Burgundy in 1839 to find inspiration near the Mediterranean shores. However, from the 1880s, he took a new look at Beaune. This inclination translates into short stays in this city which does not fail to pay homage to the renowned painter that he has become. Ziem in return showed his attachment to him by making donations of works and objects to the municipal museum, supplemented in 1912 by a large donation from his widow. This substantial and diversified collection makes the Beaune museum the third place of reference for the painter's work, after the Ziem museum and the Petit Palais in Paris.
