By Sylvie Vauclaire, Astrophysicist, Professor Emeritus at the University of Toulouse.
The time scales involved in the processes of structuring and evolving the world are far beyond our understanding. Yet it is capable of discovering and locating the keys that will enable it to better understand its origins within this global complexity.
The chemical elements that make up our current environment come from the Big Bang for the lighter elements, and from the burning interior of stars and their explosions for the heavier elements. They were then structured into an innumerable variety of molecules.
How did all this happen? Why and how did primordial chaos give birth to increasingly complex structures? Where did the Universe come from? Where did life come from? We now know that there are billions of planets in the Galaxy; is there life elsewhere?
These are just some of the fundamental questions we still don't know the answers to, but which are becoming increasingly clear as scientific knowledge advances.
