Favorite artist of Catherine Marnas and regular at Les Salins, Julien Duval returns this time to present his version of Candide. It pays homage to the biting humor of Voltaire and his bet that intelligence will triumph over obscurantism.
“Candide is a virgin being who discovers the world before our eyes, like a wild child or an alien who lands. And what shocks he must take! He is a magnificent character, ultra-sensitive, revolted at times; a young man struggling with the reality of the violence of the world, and who, faced with disillusion, will never want to give in to despair or cynicism. I staged Candide as an emergency facing the world, an urgency for Enlightenment, an urgency to appeal to reason: because fact must triumph over opinion. Because despite our time, I want to believe in progress, in Man, and in the possibility of happiness. Because I affirm that we can be light and talk about absolutely essential things: seriousness is not a guarantee of intelligence. And all of Voltaire's intelligence is catalyzed in his humor. Spicy, free, sassy. »Julien Duval
