Presentation

Built in the first half of the 15th century, the castle of Tarascon is a perfect example of a fortress that combines the Gothic and Renaissance styles. Built on a rock, at the intersection of land and river routes, it links Provence to Languedoc.
The imposing fortress of Tarascon stands like a sentinel overlooking the waters of the Rhône. During the Middle Ages, the château was located on the border of the County of Provence, opposite Beaucaire and French territory, and gave the impression of defence. Louis II, Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence, began the construction of the château in 1400. The work was continued by Louis III, then René I. The fortress was eclipsed by the Renaissance palace during the reign of 'Good King René'. In the 18th century, the old residence of the Counts of Anjou was stripped of its former glories so it could house prisoners of war and convicts on their way to the labour camp. With the presence of the Court of First Instance in Tarascon, it functioned as a detention centre in the 19th century and until 1926.
